Ignorant or Undisciplined? Two destructive habits and how to avoid them

Step 4: Check – Gotta Take An Accounting…

Jim Rohn Step 4: Check – Gotta Take An Accounting…Results. That’s the name of the game. What results are you getting in your life – personal, financial, spiritual? Do you know?

Periodically, you should be checking to see what results you are getting and decide if you are okay with those results. If you are satisfied with the results, great, keep doing what you’ve been doing and you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. If you’re unsatisfied with your results, great, let’s discuss what we need to do to change and improve the results. If you want bigger and better results, heck that’s fantastic, then let’s discuss ways you can increase your productivity, effectiveness, or sheer effort!

Either way, you need to know where you are at to see what type of course corrections need to be made to get you where you want to go, make sense? Great.

The great business philosopher Jim Rohn once told an ancient, biblical story about a master who had three servants, to which he gave talons. To the first servant, the master gave 5 talons, to the second servant the master gave 2 talons, and to the third servant he gave 1 talon.

The master was leaving for a short period of time and instructed his servants to increase their number of talons (wealth) while he was away; upon his return home, they’d have an “accounting”. So after a while the master returned and asked the servants how they did. Servant one said he increased his number of talons from 5 to 10. “Good numbers,” replied the master. The master then asked the second servant how he did and the servant showed him 4 talons. “Good numbers,” replied the master. Lastly, the master asked the third servant how he did and the servant said he still has his original 1 talon…

The story says the master “Lost His Cool!” The master freaked out and told the servant since he only managed to KEEP his 1 talon and NOT increase it he strongly suggests the servant give it to one of the other servants [pointing to the first and second servant]!”

Now why did the master freak out on the third servant who didn’t increase his number of talons? The answer according to Jim Rohn, “WE DON’T KNOW! I don’t know, you don’t know, nobody knows! But I think he was trying to prove a point that results is the name of the game.”

So here are the takeaways:

  1. You gotta get results, because RESULTS is the name of the game
  2. Take an accounting of your own personal talons!

Thus, I strongly recommend that you take an accounting with yourself:

-          Health and Wellness – Take an accounting! Do you feel energized, are you at your perfect weight and physique, or would you like to sleep better?

-          Relationships – Take an accounting! Do you have friends you can count on, do you feel connected with your family, would you like to feel more appreciated by the people you love?

-          Finances – Take an accounting! How much money are you making, are you okay with that amount, would you like to increase it, would you like to increase your monthly cash flow?

Take an accounting in every area of your life. You need to know where you are at in order to get better and improve that area of your life. You can do it, just take the necessary time to review your results and make adjustments as necessary (next article).

“Just do your work.” That advice from a high-school drama teacher hit home with Matt Damon. The young actor knew doing his best— even if no one else seemed to notice—was the only way to succeed.

Even if it meant losing 40 pounds in 100 days to play a heroin addicted Gulf War veteran in the 1996 film Courage Under Fire—a decision others cautioned him against for health reasons. Or devoting a year to writing the critically acclaimed Good Will Hunting. Or spending hours on the firing range and learning to box so he’d know how to carry himself in the role of a trained killer in the 2002 film The Bourne Identity. Or going with police on a drug raid in preparation to play a dirty cop in The Departed in 2006.

In most cases, Damon reaped rewards for his preparation and hard work. The studios waged a bidding war for the script for Good Will Hunting, which landed an Academy Award for best original screenplay, as well as several other nominations. He received some 30 script offers within a week after The Bourne Identity opened.
But although he had poured himself into his role for Courage Under Fire, his performance garnered little attention from critics. Damon was crushed that his sacrifice was for nothing. Then came a chance meeting with a legendary director.

While filming Good Will Hunting, co-star Robin Williams introduced the young actor to Steven Spielberg, who recognized Damon but couldn’t place him. “He said, ‘What movie have you been in?’ ” Damon recalls in an Inside the Actors Studio interview. “I said, ‘I was in Courage Under Fire.’ He said, ‘I loved you in that movie. I
was thinking I wanted you to play Private Ryan, but I thought you were too skinny.’ ”

And that, says Damon, was how Spielberg cast him in the title role of the 1998 blockbuster,Saving Private Ryan. It turned out doing the work was all the preparation Damon needed.

Preparing for Greatness

Want to increase your learning and earning potential? Prepare and persist.

Learn while you commute.
Listening to educational audios while commuting 12,000 miles annually for three years can be equivalent to two years of college study.
Read up.
While experts debate the number of books you must read to make you an expert on a topic (somewhere between 3 and 300), many tout reading as the key to success.
Teach someone what you know.
Teaching others reinforces your own abilities, helps you look at a subject in different ways and inspires you to learn your subject inside and out.
Practice, practice, practice.
But remember Vince Lombardi’s advice: “Only perfect practice makes perfect.”

Signature How Matt Damon Succeeds

Step Three: DO!

Do ing 300x280 Step Three: DO!Now it’s time to take your world class plan and put it into action! This means “pounding the pavement”, “hitting the roads”, and working hard!

Why? Because a plan without action leads to delusion.

Jim Rohn, America’s foremost business philosopher says, ‘The difference between a goal and accomplishment is discipline.’ That’s daily discipline, continued until you hit your goal! Whether that takes 1 month, 1 year, or 1 decade!

We have to be disciplined; disciplined to take daily action towards our goal.

All the positive thinking in the world will not sculpt your body into a muscular, toned machine. All the positive thinking in the world will not produce a 7 figure annual income. All the positive thinking in the world will not build a solid, loving marriage with your spouse. So we have to take action.

In order to take action, you have to have a plan. If you do not, I recommend finding a mentor to develop a plan for you and to re-read ‘Step Two: Plan’. If you’re not ready to develop a plan, I refer you to ‘Step One: Education.’

*Note on planning: include how much time per week you will dedicate to your business. If dedicate 14 hours per week, that’s great, then I recommend dedicating 2-hours per day to profit producing activities versus two 7-hour days of intense labor. This daily action creates momentum and once you create momentum, there is no stopping you!

The analogy is like a snowball rolling down a hill. At first, the hill may not be ‘very steep’ and it seems almost impossible to get the snowball rolling on its own. But with enough CONSISTENT action over a reasonable amount of time the snowball picks up momentum and gets bigger and bigger and bigger until it’s a boulder tearing down the hill! When this happens, look out!

Now you are educated, have a plan and are ready to work, hard! Perfect, now we get busy DOing our plan!

Remember, there is no magic formula; there is no magic pill you can take to lose 30 lbs in 2 weeks, there is no magic business opportunity that will produce a 6-figure income in 2 months, there is no magic program that will build you a real estate kingdom in 6 months! Success is daily consistent effort towards a well defined goal with a specific timeline. This process can seem laborious, uneventful, and labor intensive. Let me assure you my friends that it pays off, exponentially!

Lastly, keep in mind that nothing great happens in 1 week or 1 month. It takes time for an acorn to grow into a mighty oak tree to grow. Set realistic expectations and if things go slower than you’d like, realize it’s ok, and keep working hard. If you want faster results, double your efforts on the inside and outside.

As you execute your well defined plan, I wish you mental strength and perseverance as you pound the pavement and hit the roads (because you’ll need it J).

Here’s to your blood, sweat, and tears in pursuing your dream!

Step Two: Plan

“Those who fail to plan are planning to fail.” Ever heard this before? I bet it just went into one ear and out the outer, just like it did for me at first!

This quote has been around the block and back, twice! It has been used over and over and over again, and frankly, I was tired of hearing it until I realized the frequency of its use was related to its importance, i.e. it’s 100% TRUE!

This quote is pure gold, so let’s review it again, “those who fail to plan are planning to fail.” I urge you to save yourself time, energy, and stress and accept it as truth and APPLY it in your life. The application is really the most important part.

Did you know people will plan their vacations with more detail and more emotion than they do their lives? How do you explain that? You have to be a good planner in the areas of life that matter.

What’s step two for life change…

planning glassboard 300x300 Step Two: Plan

STEP TWO: PLAN

If you want to make changes in your life, in any area, you have to plan it out. If you do not have a plan for making personal changes, the changes will not happen.

“For
Hey, you’re where you are at today because you didn’t have a plan, had the wrong plan, or didn’t follow through on the right plan!things to improve, you need to improve; for things to get better, you need to get better!” To improve and get better, YOU NEED A PLAN!

Let’s get you the RIGHT PLAN with the RIGHT TIMELINE then all you need to do is FOLLOW THROUGH on the plan we create!

If you do not have a plan, you do not know what you really want, and if you do not know what you really want, how are you ever going to get “it”?

Let us use the ‘Lose Weight’ scenario from the Step One post as an example. We have to ask the questions:

      - How much weight do you want to lose?
            - Is it 1, 10, 20, 50, or 100lbs?
      - How fast do you want to lose the weight?
            - 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or yesterday?
      - What are your expectations in this journey?

We have to decide what our goal is, develop a timeline to determine how long it will take to hit your goal, and set expectations.

* Note: your timeline needs to be realistic. Let’s say you want to lose 40 lbs. Well, it took you more than 2 weeks to put the 40 lbs on so it will take you longer than 2 weeks to take off that 40 lbs. A more realistic goal would be 18-20 weeks, which would mean you are losing 2 – 2.2 lbs per week. Make sense?

It doesn’t matter if you want to create a six or seven-figure annual income, develop a better relationship with your spouse, increase your confidence and belief in yourself, whatever, YOU NEED TO HAVE A PLAN WITH A TIMELINE! Is this sinking in yet? I hope so….

I’m here to help and I actively help others with the specifics of Steps 1 & 2. If you’d like help with plan development, contact me (below), and we can get started.

Step One: Education

bookstack2 300x265 Step One: EducationThe great business philosopher Jim Rohn said, “For things to get better, you must get better,” and “for things to change, you must change.” These words ring as true today as they did when he first spoke them over 30 years ago.

I have never met someone who wanted to live an unhealthy, unhappy, and unsuccessful life. EVERYONE wants to be happy, healthy, and successful in whatever they do. However, what few realize is true happiness, health, and success is HARD WORK! Things do not improve if you do not do the work required for the improvement.

Step one to a happy, healthy, and successful life is education. Jim Rohn said, “If you want to be happy, study happiness; if you want to be wealthy, study wealth; if you want to be successful, study success!” The common thread here is STUDY! You have to educate yourself in the area you want to see improvement in.

For example, let’s say there is a car that needs a new head gasket. Do you think it’s possible for someone who has never worked on a car before to tear apart the car, replace the gasket, and successfully put the car back together? NO. You see, no matter if you want to be a mechanic or a millionaire, you have to study the trade and practice, practice, and practice. Just because you want something does not mean it’s going to come true, you have to work at it. The first step to getting what you want is education.

Let’s make one thing clear…becoming educated is hard work!

If you want to be a millionaire but are unwilling to do the hard work necessary, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BECOME A MILLIONAIRE. Now on the other hand, if you do the hard work in educating yourself in wealth, wealth creation – active, passive, and portfolio income, , and a wide array of topics related to wealth, then you’ve completed step one of the equation! It doesn’t guarantee you’ll become wealthy, but you are on the right track.

I want to encourage you to turn off the TV, radio, computer, and pick up a book in the area you want to see improvement in. If you want to feel better study nutrition, if you want to look better study nutrition and exercise, if you want better relationships study relationships, and so on!

Once you make the decision to improve, there is no stopping you, period. Just do the work. I believe in you, now, believe in yourself.
